Mastering the art of layering necklaces can transform your look, adding impact to any outfit.
When it comes to jewellery, the beauty is in the freedom of expression and there should be no hard and fast rules. However, if you are seeking some loose guidelines for stacking necklaces, here’s a simple approach to creating a stunning layered look:
The Base Chain
When putting on your necklaces, begin with the shortest piece, this serves as your foundation and then progressively add longer chains, building up to a beautiful and cohesive look.
The Statement Layer
Once you have established your base, it's time to make a statement with your middle or second and final layer. These pieces serve as the focal point of your layered look and as an expression of your individuality. Here are some options to consider for your statement layer:
Gemstone pendants: Choose a gemstone pendant or necklace that catches the light and adds a touch of glamour. Light reflective gemstones are the perfect option for bringing interest and wow factor.
Initial pendants: Personalise your look with an initial pendant that reflects your identity or that of someone special. This thoughtful addition not only looks stylish but also carries a meaningful sentiment.
String of pearls: For a timeless and elegant touch, incorporate a string of pearls. This classic option brings sophistication and versatility, seamlessly transitioning from day to night.
Colourful beads or charms: If you want to add a playful vibe, consider a necklace adorned with colourful beads or charms, adding a youthful and fun element to your layered look.
The statement layer is where your creativity can truly flourish so don’t shy away from mixing textures, colours or designs. Whether you opt for bold or delicately intricate, this layer will be the heart of your perfect stack.
While you can absolutely layer just two necklaces, going for three to five pieces can make a truly striking statement. Layering allows you to showcase multiple beloved pieces all at once so there is no need to choose a single favourite, but I suggest keeping the number of layers to a maximum of three to five to avoid overwhelm.
The long layer(s)
If you are adding more than two layers, a lariat can make a stunning long layer with a lower cut neckline. A disc also adds a beautiful focal point, as does a long 24” paperclip style chain. Extra long chains that have been doubled up can also add interest. The key is to create a cascading effect.
Spacing
Try to keep the drop of each layer around 2” apart to avoid tangles and to showcase each piece. If you find a shorter necklace that you love but wish to add some length, consider using a necklace extender. This simple accessory offers flexibility and opens up so many new styling possibilities.
Texture and contrast
Incorporate a mix of materials such as delicate chains, chunky pendants or beaded pieces. Mixing textures adds interest and originality to your layered look. Pairing a statement necklace with more understated pieces enhances the focal point while allowing the overall composition to shine harmoniously.
Mix metals
Gone are the days of sticking to just one metal. Mixing different jewellery metals can create a stunning, personalised look that adds dimension and interest to your style.
Personal Touch
Add pieces that hold sentimental value, like a family heirloom or a charm that represents your journey. This not only enhances your outfit but tells your story. Add a vintage pendant with intricate details, alongside understated chains to make your feature piece stand out.
The practicalities of avoiding tangles
When it comes to wearing multiple chains, there's nothing more frustrating than dealing with twisted, tangled necklaces. However, there is a simple necklace separating clasp that you can use, consisting of two connecting pieces: one side features rings to which you can securely attach your existing necklace clasp and the other side has a clasp that connects to the opposite end of your chain. This addition will keep your necklaces neatly separated. The clasp does not need to be fitted by a jeweller and can be purchased as a standalone item that can be added to most necklace chains with a lobster clap, bolt ring clasp or similar closures.
